Harford County is located in the state of Maryland. The county seat is Bel Air and Harford County is part of the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. The county was formed in 1773 and was named for Henry Harford. Two incorporated cities, Aberdeen and Havre de Grace and one town, Bel Air are located here. There are a number of census-designated places and unincorporated areas in the county. Harford County is bordered by York County, Pennsylvania to the north and Lancaster County Pennsylvania to the northeast. Baltimore County borders to the west, Cecil County is to the east and Kent County is the south.
The county has a rich history and as a result has many properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Residents of Harford County are served by the Harford County Public School system and contains 32 elementary schools, 8 middle schools and 10 high schools. There are also a number of private schools, including Harford Friends School, John Carroll School and Harford Christian School.
Residents of Harford County enjoy a variety of sports and the county is home to the Aberdeen Iron Birds, a minor league baseball team founded by hall of famer and former Baltimore Orioles player, Cal Ripken. He was raised in Aberdeen.
Harford County is the location for the Susquehanna River National Wildlife Refuge. Residents of Harford can enjoy nature here as well as a number of other places, such as Gunpowder Falls State Park. The park contains 18,000 acres and over 100 miles of trails in addition to picnic areas, whitewater canoeing, swimming, fish and boating. Shopping venues include the Harford Mall and the proximity to Baltimore-Washington area provides an even more varied selection of arts and cultural institutions and fine dining.
Harford County is the location of the U.S. Army’s Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG). Established in 1918 by an Act of Congress, APG is the single largest employer in the county with 7,500 civilians and 5,000 military personnel. APG is situated on 72,500 acres and is the headquarters of the United States Army Test and Evaluation Command.
